In 1918, Opha Mae Johnson became the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Today, there are 48 female American Marines on the front lines in Afghanistan, often gaining access — and trust — among Afghan women and children in ways that male American and NATO troops might not be able to manage.
